Blow to the Head Following a Hair Transplant

Receiving a blow to the head following a hair transplant can adversely affect the healing process and may cause damage to the transplanted grafts. Particularly during the first 7 to 10 days, as the hair follicles have not yet fully taken root, a blow could cause these follicles to become dislodged or suffer permanent damage.

What Is a Blow to the Head Following a Hair Transplant?

A blow to the head following a hair transplant refers to any impact or trauma to the area where the hair follicles have been implanted. A blow to the head following a hair transplant poses a serious risk, particularly during the first few weeks when the grafts have not yet fully settled. Such a blow may occur whilst playing sport, through unintentional pressure on the head during sleep, or as a result of accidentally bumping into something in daily life. A sensation of a blow to the head following a hair transplant manifests as a sudden twinge or throbbing in the treated area. Protecting the grafts during this period is of critical importance for successful healing and natural-looking results.

Is it dangerous to receive a blow to the head after a hair transplant?

Receiving a blow to the head following a hair transplant can be dangerous, particularly within the first 10–14 days. This is because, during this period, 70–80 per cent of the grafts are still in the process of taking root. A strong blow during this period can cause the grafts to become dislodged, break off or lead to bleeding or clotting problems. Furthermore, increased swelling and inflammation of the scalp can prolong the healing process. If the grafts are damaged, a repeat hair transplant may be required, which entails both additional costs and a further invasive procedure. For this reason, patients must take extra care in all their daily activities to avoid any impact to the head following a hair transplant.

Does Getting Hit in the First Few Days Damage the Grafts?

Suffering an impact in the early days may disrupt the process by which the grafts attach to the microchannels. During the transplant procedure, the grafts attempt to attach to the root tissue within the channels created to ensure a supply of nutrients and oxygen. If mechanical trauma occurs in this environment, the risk of the root structure splitting or breaking increases. This can result in the transplanted hair failing to grow or growing irregularly. Furthermore, small haematomas (blood clots) that may form in the first few days can block the grafts’ blood supply, causing them to die. For this reason, avoiding any impact to the head following a hair transplant is the first and most important rule for achieving successful results.

What Should Be Done After the Coup?

If the head is struck following a hair transplant, the initial response requires taking the appropriate steps without delay. The basic steps to follow after such an impact are set out below:

  • Application of a Cold Compress: Apply a cold compress to the affected area using a clean cloth or towel for 10–15 minutes. This will reduce swelling and pain.
  • Light Pressure and Rest: Rest with your head elevated. Avoid excessive movement and activities that may raise your blood pressure.
  • Bleeding and Discharge Control: If there is any bleeding at the incision site or donor site, try to stop the bleeding by applying gentle pressure with a sterile gauze pad.
  • Medicines for Pain and Inflammation: You can take the mild painkillers and anti-inflammatories recommended by your doctor.
  • Quick Consultation with a Doctor: If the pain following the injury is severe, if the swelling in the area is significantly greater than normal, or if there is any discharge or signs of infection, contact your doctor without delay.

Which Types of Blows Pose a Risk?

The situations that pose the greatest risk of head injury following a hair transplant are as follows:

  • Collision with a Solid Object: A direct impact against a hard surface, such as a door, cupboard or car door.
  • Sports Injuries: High-intensity activities such as football, basketball and combat sports.
  • Sleeping Position: Butting one’s head hard against a pillow or a window.
  • Daily Accidents: Hitting your head whilst climbing stairs or bending down and standing up.

Providing extra protection against this sort of impact is vital, particularly during the first two weeks.

When Do Grafts Take Hold Completely?

Grafts usually take hold completely within 10–14 days. During this period;

  • Muscle Graft Transplantation: Grafts become integrated with the surrounding tissue in the channels into which they are placed.
  • Neovascularisation: New capillaries develop around the graft and supply nutrients to the roots.
  • Scar Tissue Formation: The slight scar tissue surrounding the grafts has a stabilising effect.

After 14 days, the vast majority of the grafts have stabilised and become slightly more resistant to external impacts. What if there is bleeding or swelling following a blow to the head?

If bleeding or swelling is observed following a blow to the head;

  • Sterilised Gauze Pad: Apply gentle pressure to stop the bleeding.
  • Cold Compress: Apply a cold compress for up to 15 minutes to reduce swelling.
  • Painkiller and Anti-inflammatory: Take the medicines prescribed by your doctor.
  • Admission to the Hospital: If the bleeding does not stop, or if the area is red or feels warm, please contact the clinic immediately. Early intervention minimises both the risk of infection and graft loss.

Measures That Can Be Taken to Prevent a Coup

To minimise the risk of a blow to the head following a hair transplant, take the following precautions:

  • Avoid wearing a hard hat or cap for the first 10–14 days following a hair transplant.
  • Protect your head by using a low pillow or a special neck pillow whilst you sleep.
  • Postpone sport and strenuous exercise for at least two weeks.
  • To prevent accidents in the home, organise your belongings clearly and keep well clear of sharp corners.
  • Avoid public transport or crowded places as much as possible.

These measures minimise the risk of graft loss and help to preserve the results of the hair transplant.
