Understanding the Norwood Scale

The Norwood Scale consists of seven stages, each representing a different level of hair loss severity. Let’s examine each stage in detail:

Stage 1: No Visible Hair Loss

• It is characterised by thick hair and the complete absence of hair loss.
• The hairline retains its original shape and usually forms a continuous border around the forehead.

Stage 2: Slight receding of the hairline

• A slight receding of the hairline, usually observed in the temple area.
• As this stage is generally regarded as a mature hairline, it may go unnoticed by many men.

Stage 3: The First Signs of Clinically Significant Hair Loss

• Some men may also experience thinning hair at the crown of the head (the crown area).

Stage 3 Peak: Receding Hairline and Thinning at the Crown

Stage 4: More Severe Hair Loss

• The hairline recedes more rapidly and the bald patch on the crown of the head grows larger.
• A strand of hair still connects the two sides of the head.

Stage 5: Advanced Hair Loss

• The band of hair between the crown of the head and the sides becomes narrower and sparser.
• The areas of hair loss at the temples and crown become larger and more pronounced.

Stage 6: Generalised Hair Loss

• The strip of hair at the top of the head is receding, giving way to a large bald patch.
• Hair remains only on the sides and back of the head.

Stage 7: The Most Severe Form of Hair Loss

• Only a thin strip of hair remains on the sides and back of the head.
• The remaining hair is generally finer and sparser.
