Hair Transplants in Turkey and the US: Cost, Quality, Safety and Results (2026)

American clinics charge between 5 and 10 dollars per graft. Istanbul’s top accredited clinics, however, charge a fee equivalent to between 0.60 and 0.80 € per graft, all-inclusive. This difference reflects not a difference in quality, but a difference in the economics of healthcare.

Before dismissing Turkey as too far away or too risky, consider this: Istanbul is a 10-hour direct flight from New York. A 4,000-graft procedure in Istanbul costs between $3,500 and $8,000 all-inclusive. The same procedure in New York costs between $20,000 and $40,000 in procedure fees alone. The figures make sense even before you board the plane.

This page answers every question American patients actually ask: cost, quality, safety, regulations, techniques, packages and what happens if a follow-up appointment is required after returning home. The results are based on data, not marketing.

What Are the Differences Between Hair Transplant Procedures in Turkey and the US?

Hair transplant procedures in Turkey are 75–85 per cent cheaper than in the US, are performed by surgeons with a higher level of expertise, and incorporate advanced techniques such as Robotic DHI, which no clinic in the US offers. As for surgical instruments in Turkey… Hair transplant procedures in Turkey and the US are the same. The price difference is structural in nature, not clinic-specific.

FACTOR TURKEY (AAACI-Accredited) USA (Top Clinics)
Cost (4,000 grafts) 3,500–8,000 dollars (all-inclusive) 20,000–40,000 dollars (procedure only)
Pricing model Fixed all-inclusive package Per-graft fee (5–10 dollars/graft): penalises advanced hair loss.
Post-transplant survival rate 90–97 per cent (DHI); up to 97 per cent (Robotic DHI) 85–95 per cent (standard FUE)
Robotic DHI YES, a special announcement worldwide: Dr Terziler is not available in US clinics.
Surgeon’s caseload 500–700 procedures per year (specialists) <100 per year (hair transplants are just one of the many services offered)
Accreditation AAACI: Independent on-site inspection, over 1,200 standards. ABHRS: Voluntary, self-reported registrations
Waiting time 1–2 weeks 1–3 months
What is included? Accommodation, transfers, medication, 12-month follow-up, FUT scar revision Procedure only. Accommodation, travel and follow-up services are subject to an additional charge.
HAQ Index 74.4 (Turkey): in the top 50 per cent globally 88.7 (USA)
Insurance cover None: medical tourism None; classified as an elective procedure for cosmetic purposes. Not eligible for FSA/HSA.
Travel is required Yes, Istanbul (JFK: 10-hour direct flight) NO

Hair transplants in Turkey are 75% to 85% cheaper than in the US; this is not due to lower quality, but because surgical labour costs and clinic overheads in Istanbul are 60% to 70% lower than in New York or Los Angeles.

Compare Turkey and the US

How much cheaper is hair transplantation in Turkey compared to the US?

Hair transplants in Turkey are 75–85 per cent cheaper than in the US. A 4,000-graft procedure in Istanbul costs between 3,500 and 8,000 US dollars, all-inclusive of accommodation, transfers, medication and a 12-month follow-up. The same procedure in the US costs between 20,000 and 40,000 US dollars for the procedure fee alone.

The per-graft pricing model used in most clinics in the US is mathematically harsh for patients experiencing moderate to severe hair loss. A patient at Norwood stage 5 or 6 requires 4,000–6,000 grafts. At a rate of US$8 per graft in New York, you would have to pay US$32,000–48,000 for the procedure alone. In Istanbul, however… The cost of a hair transplant in Turkey ranges from $3,500 to $8,000 all-inclusive for the same patient.

Important: Most Turkish clinics, including Dr Terziler Exclusive Clinic, do not charge on a per-graft basis. Procedures are priced as fixed, all-inclusive packages. This means that a patient requiring 5,500 grafts will pay the same package price as a patient requiring 3,000 grafts. In the US, an additional $5–$10 is added to the bill for each extra graft. The more severe the patient’s hair loss, the higher the cost.

NORWOOD HAIR TRANSPLANTS USA (procedure only) ISTANBUL (all-inclusive) SAVINGS (including $700 flight ticket + $800 hotel)
Northwest I-II 1,500–2,000 9,000–20,000 dollars 3,500–8,000 dollars $5,700–$16,500
North-West III 2,000–2,500 12,000–25,000 dollars $3,500–$8,000 $7,700–$20,200
North-West IV 2,500–3,500 15,000–35,000 dollars $3,500–$8,000 $9,700–$29,700
North-West V–VI 3,500–5,000 20,000–50,000 dollars $3,500–$8,000 $13,700–$43,500

Price ranges by city in the US: In New York and Los Angeles, the average is 12,000–25,000 dollars per session. In Dallas and Miami, prices range from 8,000 to 18,000 dollars. In Chicago, the average is 10,000–22,000 dollars. In Istanbul, however, the price remains the same regardless of which US city the patient is flying from.

No health insurance in the US covers hair transplants; this procedure is classified as an elective cosmetic procedure. FSA and HSA accounts are also not eligible for this procedure. Even when a direct Turkish Airlines return flight from JFK (400–700 dollars) and four nights’ hotel accommodation (600–800 dollars), American patients still end up paying 10,000–30,000 dollars more for this procedure than the price a clinic in the US would charge on its own.

How much does a 3,000-graft hair transplant cost in the US and Turkey?

In the US, 3,000 hair grafts cost between $15,000 and $30,000, at $5–10 per graft. At top-tier clinics in New York or Los Angeles, the price for 3,000 grafts can reach up to $30,000. Bosley, the largest hair transplant chain in the US, prices smaller sessions at between $5,000 and $15,000 and does not offer fixed-price packages for 3,000 grafts; each graft is billed separately.

In Istanbul, a 3,000-graft hair transplant costs between $3,500 and $8,000 all-inclusive, covering accommodation, airport transfers, medication, the procedure itself and a 12-month follow-up plan. Before travel expenses are taken into account, the saving ranges from $11,000 to $26,000.

How much does a 4,000-graft hair transplant cost in the US and Turkey?

Based on standard per-graft prices in the US, 4,000 hair grafts range from $20,000 to $40,000. A 4,000-graft session covers Norwood 4 to early Norwood 5, one of the most common profiles in hair restoration. In Istanbul, a 4,000-graft hair transplant costs between $3,500 and $8,000 on an all-inclusive basis.

The price difference of $15,000–$35,000 between a procedure in the US and an all-inclusive package in Istanbul is the most frequently cited financial factor behind the decision to travel. Both procedures utilise the same FDA-approved extraction tools and the same Choi implanter pen DHI system. Clinical outcomes do not differ between AAACI-accredited clinics.

How much does a 5,000-graft hair transplant cost in the US and Turkey?

In the US, 5,000 hair grafts cost between $25,000 and $50,000. This corresponds to Norwood stages 5–6: advanced hair loss requiring one of the largest sessions in hair restoration. At a price of $8–10 per graft in New York or Los Angeles, the cost of a single session (procedure only) can reach $50,000.

In Istanbul, the cost of 5,000 grafts ranges from $3,500 to $8,000, all-inclusive. As Turkish clinics do not charge per graft, a patient having 5,000 grafts implanted usually pays the same package price as a patient having 4,000 grafts. Compared to a clinic in the US for this number of grafts, savings of $20,000–$45,000 are achieved, including airfares and hotel costs.

This is the segment where Istanbul’s all-inclusive pricing model offers the greatest financial advantage. Patients with Norwood grades 5–6 are those for whom the cost barrier posed by US clinics is the most insurmountable.

Which is the Cheapest Hair Transplant in the US?

The cheapest hair transplant in the US ranges from 4,000 to 10,000 dollars for small sessions of 500–1,500 grafts at affordable clinics in low-cost cities. Within this price range, the procedure is typically carried out by a team under the supervision of a technician, with minimal involvement from the surgeon, without an all-inclusive package and without a structured follow-up programme.

Even at these minimum US prices, a comparable all-inclusive package in Istanbul (where a surgeon with AAACI accreditation personally performs 100 per cent of the implantation) is cheaper. Even the cheapest US option is more expensive and offers significantly lower quality assurance: no named surgeon guarantee, no accreditation audit and no follow-up service included.

The cheapest option does not necessarily mean the best value. Value is the ratio between cost and outcome. Istanbul’s AAACI-approved all-inclusive model offers a better cost-to-outcome ratio than even the lowest-priced tier in the US market, regardless of the number of grafts.

What is the difference between all-inclusive hair transplant packages in Turkey and the US?

All-inclusive hair transplant packages in Turkey cover everything for a single fixed price: the procedure, hotel accommodation, airport transfers, all medication, the first wash and 12 months’ remote follow-up. Clinics in the US only charge for the procedure. Everything else is billed separately and is often not included at all.

ISTANBUL ALL-INCLUSIVE PACKAGE USA — PROCEDURE ONLY
Procedure (FUE / DHI / Robotic DHI) Procedure only
Hotel (3–5 nights, 4-star) NOT INCLUDED; please book and pay for this separately.
VIP airport transfers (arrival + departure) NOT INCLUDED
All medicines (antibiotics, painkillers, sprays) NOT INCLUDED; pharmacy charges are calculated separately.
Initial cleaning and check-up (day 3) NOT INCLUDED
12-month remote follow-up (video consultations at 3, 6 and 12 months) NOT INCLUDED; charged per visit or not offered
FUT scar revision (where applicable) NOT INCLUDED
Access to the clinical team via WhatsApp NOT INCLUDED
Satisfaction Guarantee Certificate Rarely offered

All-inclusive hair transplant packages are available in Istanbul because they are economically viable due to the volume of procedures and intense competition. Clinics in the US, due to lower procedure volumes and higher overheads, are forced to charge per graft and per service in order to remain viable as businesses, as they are unable to adopt a per-package pricing model. The two models cannot be compared in terms of procedure price; they must be compared based on the total cost of travel.

Total cost of a trip to Istanbul for a US patient: procedure $3,500–8,000 + flight ticket $400–900 + hotel (included in the package) = $3,400–5,900. An equivalent procedure carried out solely in the US: $15,000–$40,000. The all-inclusive model offers advantages across all cost categories.

Is the quality of hair transplants in Turkey the same as in the US?

Yes, hair transplants performed in Turkey at AAACI-accredited clinics achieve clinical results that are the same as, or better than, those at the best centres in the US. The graft survival rate reaches 92–97 per cent. The equipment used is the same: FDA-approved sapphire blades, Choi implantation pens and tumour anaesthesia protocols. The level of surgical expertise in Istanbul is higher, not lower.

Turkish hair transplant surgeons perform 500–700 procedures per year. Their counterparts in the US, however, perform fewer than 100 procedures on average because hair transplantation is offered alongside dermatology, PRP and other cosmetic services. Volume breeds precision. A surgeon who has performed 3,000 procedures over a lifetime possesses a muscle memory that a surgeon with only 300 procedures lacks.

A quality warning applies to both markets: not all clinics are the same. Approximately 60 per cent of clinics in Istanbul operate without AAACI or JCI accreditation. The question should not be ‘Is Turkey safe?’, but ‘Is this clinic accredited?’. Accreditation acts as a filter. An unaccredited clinic in Istanbul carries the same risk profile as a US clinic run by uncertified technicians.

Clinical evidence supports accredited Turkish medical practices. Hair transplant success rates and outcomes. Epstein et al. (Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, 2024, PMID:38936998) document the grafts. A survival rate of 92–97 per cent has been achieved at AAACI-approved DHI clinics; this rate is consistent with results published by leading facilities in the US.

The one quality distinction that no clinic in the US can offer: Robotic DHI is exclusively available at Dr Terziler’s Exclusive Clinic in Istanbul. With an ex vivo time of less than 90 seconds per graft, depth control of ±0.1 mm and angular precision of ±5°, it achieves a graft survival rate of up to 97 per cent. ARTAS (the robotic system used in some US clinics) only automates the extraction process. Implantation is carried out manually. Robotic DHI, on the other hand, automates both stages. These represent categorically different levels of precision. Picasso Robotic DHI is the same Robotic DHI system that incorporates the artistic hairline touch of Dr Servet Terziler (known in the Turkish market as ‘Picasso of Hair’).

What is the difference between hair transplant regulations in Turkey and the US?

It requires independent on-site physical inspections every three years in accordance with 1,200 clinical standards. In the US, ABHRS certification, however, requires self-reported surgical records without independent verification. AAACI is a more rigorous standard, and Dr Terziler Exclusive Clinic holds dual AAACI accreditation for both the surgeon and the facility.

STANDARD USA (ABHRS) AAACI-Accredited Turkey
Type of certification Voluntary, self-declared Mandatory audit, independent auditors
Verification method Self-submitted surgical records On-site physical inspection every 3 years
Standards checklist Written and oral examination Over 1,200 clinical standards
Surgical training required. No federal or state legislation required. Ministry of Health licensing (compulsory)
Facility standards Varies by state. Same regulatory body as outpatient surgical centres in the US.

In the US, any licensed medical doctor is legally permitted to perform hair transplants. ABHRS certification is optional. In Turkey, however, the Ministry of Health requires a facility licence and a certificate of specialisation for all surgical staff, including nurses and technicians.

Turkey’s Health Access and Quality (HAQ) Index score is 74.4, placing it among the top 50 per cent of countries globally (data from the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre). The US score, meanwhile, is 88.7. Both countries perform well above the global average.

The real risk in hair transplantation lies not between Turkey and the US, but between accredited and non-accredited clinics. The ISHRS 2025 advisory report states that 59 per cent of its members have identified unlicensed hair transplant clinics operating in their cities. Almost all documented complications arise in non-accredited clinics.

Dr Terziler Exclusive Clinic holds dual accreditation from the AAACI: surgeon registration number #7722917 and an independent clinic certificate. Both can be publicly verified in the AAACI records at aaaasf.org.

Accreditation Check

Which hair transplant techniques do Turkish clinics offer compared to US clinics?

Istanbul’s top accredited clinics offer a full range of services. A hair transplant technique available in the US and nowhere else. Invented by Dr Servet Terziler, robotic DHI automates both the extraction and implantation of hair follicles. No clinic in the US offers this system.

TECHNIQUE AVAILABLE IN THE US? Turkey, Istanbul?
FUE Yes Yes
FUT (strip) Yes Yes
DHI (Choi pen) A limited number of clinics in the US Yes + At Dr Terziler’s: performed by the surgeon, using a 0.70 mm pen (the world’s thinnest pen)
Sapphire FUE Limited Yes
Robotic FUE (ARTAS) Yes, extraction only. Not applicable; Robotic DHI is superior.
Robotic DHI No, it is not available at any clinic in the US. Yes, it is exclusive to us worldwide. It was invented by Dr Terziler.
Shave-free (U-FUE/U-DHI) Yes Yes
Exosome therapy Limited, additional cost Yes
Post-PRP transplantation Yes, additional cost Yes, included in the packages.

Comparison of ARTAS and Robotic DHI: ARTAS only automates the extraction process. Each graft is still manually implanted into the recipient area by a surgeon or technician. By the 6th or 7th hour of a 5,000-graft session, manual implantation accuracy decreases due to hand fatigue. Robotic DHI maintains depth control of ±0.1 mm and angular precision of ±5° throughout the entire session.

Comparison of DHI and FUE: DHI uses the Choi implantation pen to load and place each graft directly; this eliminates a procedural step and reduces the time the grafts spend outside the body. Dr Terziler uses the 0.70 mm Choi pen, the smallest available for clinical use, which causes 15–20 per cent less trauma to the recipient site compared to the industry-standard 0.75 mm pen.

ATP graft preservation: For sessions involving more than 2,500 grafts, Dr Terziler preserves the grafts in a Hypothermol + ATP solution. Cooley (Journal of Hair Restoration Surgery, 2014) documented that this protocol achieved a graft viability of 72 per cent on day 5, compared with 44 per cent using Hypothermol alone and 0 per cent using standard saline.

Why do people choose to go to Turkey for hair transplants rather than the US?

According to the ISHRS Procedure Count, Turkey accounts for between 25 per cent and 35 per cent of the global hair transplant volume. In 2023, 1.8 million medical tourists chose Turkey (Turkish Ministry of Health). Hair restoration is the country’s most popular cosmetic procedure. There are five structural economic factors that explain this, and none of them are marketing claims.

The difference in labour costs. Surgical labour costs in Turkey are 60–70 per cent lower than in the US, based on purchasing power parity.

Lower fees do not equate to lower skill levels. A surgeon earning 60 per cent less per hour does not perform an operation with 60 per cent less precision.

The surgeon’s specialisation. Turkish hair transplant surgeons perform 500–700 procedures per year.

US surgeons perform fewer than 100 procedures on average because hair transplantation is just one of many services they offer. Volume ensures calibration. A surgeon who has performed 4,000 procedures over their career works with a fundamentally different muscle memory to one who has performed 400.

State support for medical tourism. The Turkish Ministry of Health actively facilitates access for international patients: VAT exemption for medical tourism procedures and e-visa access approved within minutes for US citizens.

The regulatory environment reduces friction rather than creating it.

Dense infrastructure. There are over 200 hair transplant clinics in the single metropolitan area of Istanbul.

This density boosts efficiency and competitive pricing through market dynamics that no city in the US can replicate.

Package economy. The all-inclusive model (procedure, hotel, transfers, medication and 12 months’ follow-up at a single fixed price) is available because volume demand supports it.

Clinics in the US are unable to offer comparable packages due to procedure fees that exceed the total cost of the all-inclusive package in Istanbul.

Ask Why Turkey Is Cheaper

Is Hair Transplantation in Turkey Reliable? Is it Safe?

Yes, you can trust hair transplants in Turkey at AAACI-accredited clinics. The graft survival rate ranges from 92% to 97%; this rate is on a par with results from the best centres in the US (Epstein et al., JPRAS, 2024, PMID:38936998). The equipment used is the same as that used in US clinics. Surgical protocols comply with internationally audited standards.

The question of trust is valid, but it focuses on the wrong variable. The question is not whether Turkey is trustworthy. The question is whether the clinic in question is accredited.

IMPORTANT: ISHRS 2025: 59 per cent of ISHRS members report that unlicensed hair transplant clinics are operating in their cities. Almost all documented complications stem from non-accredited, non-specialist settings. This situation is equally prevalent in Istanbul, London, Bangkok and Houston. The key factor is accreditation, not geography.

Do Americans travel to Turkey for hair transplants?

Yes, Turkey welcomed 1.8 million medical tourists in 2023, with hair transplants topping the list in the cosmetic procedures category (Turkish Ministry of Health). American patients make up one of the fastest-growing international segments. The logistics are simpler than most people realise.

US CITY FLIGHT TIME RETURN COST NOTE
New York (JFK) 10–12 hours 400–700 dollars Direct flight from JFK with Turkish Airlines — daily service
Los Angeles (LAX) 13–14 hours 600–900 dollars 1 stopover via Frankfurt or London
Chicago (ORD) 11–12 hours $450–750 1 stop
Miami (MIA) 12–13 hours 500–850 dollars 1 stop
Dallas (DFW) 12–13 hours 500–850 dollars 1 stop

E-Visa: US citizens can apply via evisa.gov.tr. Fee: $50–80. Approved within minutes. Valid for 90 days, with multiple entries permitted.

Dr Terziler’s US patient journey: Day 0: VIP airport transfer and check-in at the hotel. Day 1: Trichoscopy, donor area density mapping, hairline design consultation. Day 2: Procedure under local anaesthesia. Day 3: First wash and technical check-up. Day 4: Final check-up, return flight. Months 3, 6 and 12: Scheduled video consultations. Access to the clinical team via WhatsApp during key stages.

Many Americans who opted for this had been quoted a price of 18,000 dollars for 3,500 grafts in New York. In Istanbul, the same number of grafts cost between $3,500 and $8,000 all-inclusive. These individuals returned home having saved $12,000 and achieved a better result than the before-and-after outcomes from the New York clinic.

In Manhattan, I was quoted $22,000 for 3,800 grafts. The consultation lasted 20 minutes; the surgeon finally popped in just to say hello, and there was no follow-up plan. In Turkey, the consultation with Dr Terziler lasted 90 minutes. Dr Terziler personally assessed the density of my donor area, drew the hairline himself and used the robotic DHI system himself. I paid significantly less for the all-inclusive package. I now have a higher hair density than what is said to be achievable in New York at the 10-month mark.”

— Parker S., New York | 3,800 grafts | Robotic DHI | 10-month result

“I was suffering from severe hair loss; I was at Norwood Stage 5. All the clinics in Los Angeles quoted me prices ranging from $35,000 to $45,000. One said two sessions would be necessary. Dr Terziler in Istanbul achieved a full restoration in a single session using 4,600 grafts. The ATP storage protocol he uses for large sessions is something none of the clinics in Los Angeles mentioned. My result at the 12-month mark is the best I’ve seen among all the before-and-after results I’ve been researching for the past two years.”

— Chase R., Los Angeles | 4,600 grafts | Robotic DHI | 12-month result

“Hair loss in women is completely different from that in men, yet most clinics treat it the same way. Dr Terziler in Turkey, however, did not do that. First and foremost, he carried out a trichoscopy, clearly identified the pattern of my hair loss, and designed a hairline that looked as though I’d never lost any hair at all. Thanks to the no-shave DHI technique, I flew home looking completely natural. My colleagues at work didn’t realise I’d had any procedure at all.”

—Katherine S., Chicago | 2,200 grafts | Shave-free DHI | Female patient | 8-month result

“My biggest concern was the logistics of the four-day trip. Everything went completely smoothly. A VIP transfer from the airport, a hotel just two minutes’ walk from the clinic, the first wash on day 3, and the flight home on day 4. Dr Terziler’s team gave me a written timeline of each growth stage before I left. I wasn’t alarmed when I experienced a shocking amount of shedding in the third week – I was expecting it because they’d told me exactly what to expect and when it would happen.”

— Desmond G., Miami | 2,500 grafts | DHI | 6-month result

Can women travel to Turkey for a hair transplant?

Yes, hair transplants for women are quite common in Turkey, and Dr Terziler Exclusive Clinic specialises in female-pattern hair loss, diffuse thinning and receding hairlines. Hair loss in women affects approximately 40 per cent of women at some point in their lives. (American Academy of Dermatology).

Dr Terziler uses the shave-free DHI method as standard. Female hair transplant cases. The Choi pen allows for the precise placement of grafts within the fine density limits required by the female hairline, in most cases without the need to shave the entire head. Female patients travel specifically from the US, the UK and Germany for no-shave DHI procedures, which require the high level of precision developed by specialist surgeons in Istanbul.

Is Turkey a Suitable Destination for Afro Hair Transplants?

Yes, Turkey is a good option for Afro patients, with clinics specialising specifically in Afro-type hair. Dr Terziler Exclusive Clinic offers this service. Dr Terziler, who specialises in Afro-type hair transplants, has received training specifically on the technical requirements for harvesting hair from curly and wavy donor areas. Afro hair transplants require a different hair extraction technique: the follicular unit curls beneath the scalp, which means that standard straight-tipped FUE instruments result in high cutting rates. Dr Terziler reduces the cutting rate to below 8 per cent by using curved hair extraction tools calibrated for wavy follicular architecture.

Alongside Istanbul, the US and the UK, it is one of the few locations where high-volume Afro hair transplant expertise is available at AAACI-accredited clinics. The cost advantage is the same as for other hair types: it is $15,000–$35,000 cheaper than a similar procedure in the US.

What happens if something goes wrong after you return home?

Almost all post-operative concerns are not complications, but part of the normal healing process. The most misunderstood stage of recovery after a hair transplant is ‘shock loss’, and it is the event most likely to cause panic and anxiety in patients. A hair transplant performed without a structured follow-up programme may fail.

Shock loss occurs between the 2nd and 4th weeks. Every transplanted hair falls out. The scalp may appear worse than it did before the operation. This is a normal form of telogen effluvium; the follicle rests before re-entering the anagen growth phase. This is not a sign of graft failure. Every hair transplant patient experiences this. Patients receiving remote support do not panic.

Shock loss (the shedding of all transplanted hair within 2 to 4 weeks) is the most worrying and most misunderstood post-operative condition. This is not graft insufficiency, but normal telogen effluvium. Every patient of Dr Terziler receives a written monthly growth timeline before leaving Istanbul to ensure this phase does not cause unnecessary stress.

Remote follow-up protocol: Scheduled video consultations at 3, 6 and 12 months. Direct access to the clinical team via WhatsApp between check-ups. Photograph review at each check-up. Guidance at every stage of hair growth.

Scope of local healthcare services in the US: In the event of a fever above 38.5°C or yellow discharge from the donor sites, any US emergency care centre will prescribe antibiotics. Folliculitis can be treated with topical or oral antibiotics at any US pharmacy. These situations are rare and can be treated entirely locally without the need to travel back to Istanbul.

A realistic assessment: A clinic in New York does not offer home visits either. Dr Terziler’s structured 12-month remote protocol is more comprehensive than the post-operative programmes of most US clinics, which typically consist of a single follow-up appointment after 6 months.

Satisfaction Guarantee Certificate: Documented at the time of booking. If the 12-month result does not meet the agreed-upon clinical outcome, corrective options, including an additional session, will be discussed.

Is Hair Transplantation Painful in Turkey?

No, you will not feel any pain during the hair transplant procedure in Turkey. Hair transplants are carried out under local anaesthesia. The injection phase takes 5–10 minutes and causes temporary discomfort. After this, the scalp becomes numb and the procedure is pain-free. Most patients watch a film or fall asleep.

Dr Terziler uses a needle-free anaesthesia system as standard; this is a pressurised micro-injection system that delivers anaesthesia without the need for a needle. In the US, this is offered at an additional cost in most clinics. At Dr Terziler’s clinic, however, it is included in the price.

Post-procedure: Mild tightness and slight swelling may be observed in the donor area and around the forehead for 2–4 days. Clinical literature indicates that post-operative pain is around 2–3 out of 10 during the first 48 hours. This pain can be fully managed with standard over-the-counter painkillers.

Is Turkey or the US Better for a Hair Transplant? The Decision

Turkey stands out in terms of cost, technique, surgeon expertise, all-inclusive packages and waiting times. The US, on the other hand, offers the advantage of proximity and not requiring international travel. The decision depends on which of these factors is more important to you.

  CHOOSE TURKEY IF… IF…
Cost You have been quoted a price of over $10,000 in the US. Cost is not a factor.
Technical You want robotic DHI, which is not available in the US. ARTAS robotic extraction is an acceptable alternative.
Required grafts For more than 2,500 grafts, the per-graft pricing in the US becomes quite high. For fewer than 1,500 grafts, the price difference in the US is smaller.
Timeline You can plan a trip lasting 4–5 days. You cannot leave the country.
Fear of needles Needle-free anaesthesia is standard practice in Turkey. Needle-free anaesthesia is offered as an additional service in most clinics in the US.
Medical complexity Standard androgenetic alopecia, female-pattern, Afro Significant comorbidities requiring ongoing local monitoring

Turkey is by far the leader in the following areas: cost (75–85 per cent lower), technical accessibility (Robotic DHI is not available anywhere else in the world), surgeon specialisation (5–7 times more procedures per year), all-inclusive packages and waiting times (weeks rather than months).

The US stands out for the following advantages: no need for international travel, a familiar healthcare system, and the ease of face-to-face follow-up for patients with ongoing medical needs.

For most American patients – particularly healthy adults with androgenetic alopecia seeking the highest-quality results at the lowest cost Turkey is the superior choice, both clinically and financially. The highest graft survival rate achievable anywhere in the world—reaching up to 97 per cent—is available only in Istanbul.

The question is not: Is Turkey or the US better? The question is: Which clinic has the surgeon, accreditation, technique and aftercare infrastructure to deliver the result you want? All other variables are distractions. – Dr Servet Terziler

How Can I Identify the Best Hair Transplant Clinic in Turkey?

The best hair transplant clinic in Turkey is one that holds AAACI accreditation and where 100 per cent of transplant procedures are personally performed by a qualified surgeon. Verifying this before booking an appointment is what distinguishes excellent results from preventable disasters.

WHAT SHOULD YOU CHECK? GREEN FLAG RED FLAG
Surgeon’s name Surgeon’s name specified, verifiable references “Specialist team” — no names given
AAACI accreditation number The number can be verified at aaaasf.org. No number is available upon request.
Qualifications and awards ISHRS, recognised awards granted by AAACI. Unverified claims, stock badge images
Before-and-after gallery Date-stamped, certified photographs Undated or watermarked stock images
Written quote In detail: treatment + hotel + transfers + medication + follow-up Price changes after booking; hidden additional services
Package price All-inclusive for FUE/DHI over €2,000 For amounts under €1,500, certain services are excluded.

Dr Terziler Exclusive Clinic meets all criteria: AAACI dual accreditation (surgeon #7722917 + clinic), a qualified surgeon performing 100% of the implantations, ISHRS membership, the European Real Estate Awards’ Best Hair Transplant Doctor Award, a dated before-and-after photo gallery, and an all-inclusive written quote delivered within 24 hours of photo submission.

Reasons to choose Dr Terziler Exclusive Clinic over hair transplant clinics in the US

Dr Servet Terziler invented Robotic DHI. He is the only surgeon in the world to have designed a robotic hair transplant system based on a clinical problem rather than a search for technology. This is precisely why the Picasso system exists, and no clinic in the US is able to offer this system.

WHAT SETS DR TERZILER APART FROM OTHERS
Technical Robotic DHI: Unique in the world. Invented by Dr Servet Terziler. It is not available at any clinic in the US or outside Istanbul.
Transplant success rate Up to 97 per cent (Robotic DHI). ATP + Hypothermosol storage as standard for all sessions involving more than 2,500 grafts.
The Surgeon’s Role Dr Terziler personally performs 100 per cent of the implantation procedures himself. Not by technicians. ISHRS: Choi pen implantation is a procedure that requires a skin incision and can only be performed by a surgeon.
Choi Pen 0.70 mm diameter, the smallest diameter in clinical use. Compared to the 0.75 mm industry standard, this results in 15–20 per cent less trauma to the recipient area.
Awards European Real Estate Awards and Best Hair Transplant Doctor Award
Accreditation AAACI dual accreditation: surgeon #7722917 + clinic. Independent on-site inspection against over 1,200 standards.
Identity Information Member of the ISHRS Workshop. AAACI-approved surgeon. Inventor of Robotic DHI. Known in clinical circles as the ‘Picasso of Hair’.
Follow-up 12-month structured remote protocol: video consultations at 3, 6 and 12 months. Access to the clinical team via WhatsApp between check-ups.
Assessment A Tricho Test + trichoscopy is performed prior to each case. No candidate is accepted without donor density mapping. No excessive commitments are made regarding graft numbers.

Frequently Asked Questions: A Comparison of Hair Transplants in Turkey and the US

– Which is better for hair transplants: Turkey or the US?

Turkey stands out with costs 75–85 per cent lower than in the US, where the number of procedures performed annually is under 100, alongside a number of specialist surgeons performing over 500 procedures a year and the world’s only robotic DHI system. In AAACI-accredited clinics, the graft survival rate matches the best results achieved in the US. The US, on the other hand, offers the advantages of proximity and not requiring international travel. For most patients experiencing moderate to severe hair loss, Istanbul is a stronger option both financially and clinically.

+ How much cheaper is hair transplantation in Turkey compared to the US?

Between 75 per cent and 85 per cent cheaper. Whilst a 4,000-graft procedure in Istanbul costs between $3,500 and $8,000 all-inclusive, in the US the procedure fee alone ranges from $20,000 to $40,000. When you add a $700 return flight ticket and $800 in hotel costs, American patients save between $10,000 and $25,000.

How much does a 3,000-graft hair transplant cost in the US?

A: In the US, the cost of 3,000 grafts ranges from 15,000 to 30,000 dollars (5–10 dollars per graft). In Istanbul, however, the all-inclusive cost of 3,000 grafts ranges from $3,500 to $8,000: this includes accommodation, transfers, medication and 12 months’ follow-up care.

+ Why do people go to Turkey for hair transplants rather than the US?

Five key reasons: surgical labour costs that are 60–70 per cent lower; the number of surgeons in Turkey, which stands at 500–700, compared to fewer than 100 in the US, the Turkish government’s support for medical tourism, the concentration of clinical infrastructure in Istanbul, and the all-inclusive pricing model. Turkey accounts for 25–35 per cent of the global hair transplant volume (ISHRS Procedure Count).

+ Can hair transplants in Turkey be trusted?

Yes, at AAACI-accredited clinics. The graft survival rate reaches 92–97 per cent. The risk lies in clinic selection: 59 per cent of ISHRS members report that there are unlicensed clinics in their cities. Before booking an appointment, ask for the surgeon’s name, the AAACI accreditation number and a detailed written price quote.

Do Americans travel to Turkey for hair transplants?

Yes. Turkey welcomed 1.8 million medical tourists in 2023, and hair transplants were the most popular cosmetic procedure. Americans most frequently fly from New York (direct Turkish Airlines flight, 10–12 hours), Los Angeles, Miami, Dallas and Chicago; and they save between 10,000 and 25,000 dollars even after factoring in the cost of flights and accommodation.

+ Is the quality of hair transplants in Turkey the same as in the US?

Yes, at AAACI-accredited clinics. The same FDA-approved sapphire blades and Choi implantation pens are used. Graft survival rates reach 92–97 per cent, matching the best results in the US. The robotic DHI technique performed by Dr Terziler achieves graft survival rates of up to 97 per cent, a figure unmatched by any clinic in the US.

+ Does US health insurance cover hair transplants in Turkey?

No. US health insurance classifies hair transplants as elective cosmetic procedures and provides no cover, regardless of whether the procedure is performed in the US or abroad. FSA and HSA accounts are also excluded from cover.

+ What is robotic DHI and why is it only available in Turkey?

Robotic DHI automates both graft extraction and implantation with depth control of ±0.1 mm and angle precision of ±5°. It was invented by Dr Servet Terziler. No clinic in the US offers this system. It achieves a graft survival rate of up to 97 per cent; this is the highest rate of any technique in clinical practice.

+ What is the total cost of having a hair transplant in Turkey from the US?

The total cost in Turkey is an all-inclusive procedure fee of 3,500–8,000 US dollars, plus a return flight ticket from New York or Los Angeles costing 400–900 US dollars, plus accommodation (included in the package). Total cost: 3,900–9,200 US dollars. Considering that the procedure fee alone in the US is US$15,000–40,000, American patients save US$10,000–35,000.

+ What is AAACI accreditation and why is it important?

AAACI requires independent on-site inspections every three years in accordance with over 1,200 clinical standards; this is the same organisation that certifies outpatient surgical centres in the US. In contrast, ABHRS, a voluntary certification body in the US, relies on self-reported surgical records without independent verification. AAACI sets a more rigorous standard.

+ Is it safe for Americans to travel to Turkey for a hair transplant?

Yes. US citizens can obtain a Turkish e-visa via evisa.gov.tr for between 50 and 80 dollars, and applications are approved within a few minutes. Istanbul is a major international city. The US Department of State advises taking standard travel precautions. Turkey’s HAQ Index stands at 74.4, which is comparable to that of many EU countries.
